The Department of Information Studies was established in 1961 as the Ghana Library School. It was located in Accra under the auspices of the Ghana Library Board. Between 1961-1964, it offered the associateship-level programme of the British Library Association. In 1965, the Library School moved to the University of Ghana and was subsequently re-designated Department of Library Studies. In 1976, it became the Centre for Archival Education in English-speaking Africa under ICA/UNDP partnership with the Department of Library Studies. That same year, the department was renamed the Department of Library and Archival Studies to reflect this new partnership. Programmes offered consisted of:
In 2001, the library school changed its name again to the Department of Information Studies as part of the initiative to redirect its programmes.
